Water Resources and Environmental Engineering (WATENV)

© FBG/C.Bierwagen

Sustainable development in all areas of water resources management, water supply, waste water treatment and solid waste management is of great importance for present-day and succeeding generations. Engineers and natural scientists in water resources and environmental management are qualified to search for responses to worldwide problems of increasing water scarcity, flood risks and environmental pollution. Graduates work together with colleagues in several special fields. The job is multidisciplinary, interesting and globally needed.

What is WATENV?

WATENV is a research oriented international Master of Science Programme hosted at the Faculty of Civil Engineering and Geodetic Sciences, Leibniz University of Hanover, Germany. Students acquire interdisciplinary knowledge and key transferable skills in the fields of water engineering and sustainable water resources management. Graduates are prepared to take responsible positions e.g. in research, for water authorities and senior environmental administration. Sustainable development in all areas of water resources management and sanitary engineering is extremely important for present and future generations. After all, the quality and availability of water are increasingly under threat from societal and environmental change. Problems such as water scarcity, flooding and environmental pollution are increasing throughout the world, resulting in a great demand for experts.

Since the Faculty of Civil Engineering and Geodetic Science has a strong background in water-related sciences, it offers the ideal frame for this Master’s degree programme. Professors at the faculty have excellent international ties and undertake a range of other measures to enable the faculty to cooperate closely with partners abroad. In this English-language Master’s programme, students are integrated in research teams, many of which are involved in international research projects.

What do I learn during the studies?

Master programme

Major "Water Resources Management" and Major "Sanitary Engineering" (2 years)

In the first semester students acquire a fundamental knowledge of natural sciences, environmental hydraulics, hydrology and water resources management. In the second and third semesters, student pursue one of two specialisations: Water Resources Management or Sanitary Engineering. Specialist courses are supplemented by courses intended to help students develop the soft skills required to produce scientific work with success. In the fourth semester, students complete the Master's thesis under supervision.

Double Degree programme "Resources and Environment" (3 years)

Students who choose the Major "Resources and Environment" will spend their first year in Hannover, where they will mainly concentrate on mandatory modules. In the second year, they transfer to Tsinghua Shenzhen International Graduate School, where they initially take modules. A Practical phase offers them insights into the world of work in China. Double Degree students write a Master's thesis at each of the two universities.

Course of Studies: Research oriented, interdisciplinary Master of Science (M.Sc.)

Language: English

Duration: 2 years (1.5 years in-class, 0.5 years Master's thesis) or 3 years (Double Degree "Resources and Environment")

Final Degree: Master of Science (M.Sc.)

Specialisation: Major possible in either "Water Resources Management", "Sanitary Engineering" or "Resources and Environment" (Double Degree Programme)

Which job opportunities do I have?

Graduates work in various fields of engineering and natural sciences. With a strong background in research, they are prepared to take over leading positions in universities, research agencies and national and international organizations. Graduates are also engaged in consulting companies for planning and maintenance of water resources facilities and administrative agencies for water resources management. Worldwide growing water problems offer a wide range of job opportunities in the present and in the future.
