The IGCS conducts research on current sustainability challenges and disseminates the knowledge thus generated and facilitates exchanges of students and researchers. The IGCS is located on the campus of the Indian Institute of Madras (IITM) in Chennai, South India. On the German side, RWTH Aachen University coordinates the activities. The IGCS continues to receive funding from the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) for the next two years.
From January, LUH provides one of the IGCS area coordinators: PD Dr.-Ing. Dirk Weichgrebe will head the waste management area. In the future, a post-doc will support him, with own teaching activities at IIT Madras. Weichgrebe teaches and conducts research at LUH primarily on waste and recycling management. The core of his task at the IGCS is to further develop the research and networking activities between India and Germany on the topic of circular economy and resource conservation.
The following topics are in focus - also in close exchange with the other IGCS core areas:
- Greenhouse gas reduction through pyrolytic processing of organic municipal waste
- Development and implementation of cross-sectoral circular economy measures in the water-food-energy-waste/residue nexus
- Sustainable recovery and recycling of post-consumer plastics
