At the end of 2025, Leibniz University Hannover once again presented the Leibniz Talents awards to students who had achieved above-average results in their master's, bachelor's and law theses, as well as to student groups who had shown particular commitment beyond their studies. A total of 21 students and two student groups were honoured. The prizes were funded by the Christian Kuhlemann Foundation, which is administered by the Leibniz University Society Hannover e.V.
Joshua Lovell wrote his Master's thesis in the programme "Environmental Engineering" at the Ludwig Franzius Institute for Hydraulic Engineering, Estuarine and Coastal Engineering. His research focused on the development of a deep learning model designed to predict flood risk along the Leine River and the corresponding water depth. The specific focus was on the speed of the simulation: unlike numerical models, such a model should enable faster predictions and thus a faster response during a flood event.
